1894 Duryea
Published Friday April 11, 2003
Press Release
The oldest known surviving fully manufactured pre-production Duryea.
This 1894 Duryea has been donated to the Tallahassee Antique Car Museum.
Amazingly, it is in running condition and is considered by many to be
America’s most historically significant automobile. This Duryea appears to
have been built from scratch as a gasoline-powered automobile.
A forensic examination of the underside of the original floorboard reveals
that the pencil writing of the words “flywheel” and “Sprocket” were indeed
authored by J. Frank Duryea, the original designer of the Duryea automobile.
Media wishing a private interview with the owner please call (850) 545-6600
to schedule a convenient time.
